Which age to start
There is no single right age; there is a right readiness signal. Most Singapore swim schools accept parent-and-baby learners from around 6 months and start formal solo lessons from age 2.5. By Primary 3, most children encounter swimming again through MOE's PE curriculum, which embeds Sport Singapore's SwimSafer 2.0 Stages 1–3. Our parent guide on starting age walks through the readiness signals.
| Age | Typical stage | Termly goal |
|---|---|---|
| 2.5–3 | Stage 1 | Face wet, supported floats, calm in water |
| 3.5–5 | Stage 2 | 25 m unassisted continuous swim |
| 5–8 | Stage 3 | Four strokes, 50 m continuous |
| 7–10 | Stage 4 (Bronze) | 100 m + intro rescue skills |
| 9–13 | Stage 5 (Silver) | Timed strokes + H.E.L.P. survival |
| 11–16 | Stage 6 (Gold) | 400 m + advanced rescue |
What every kids lesson covers
- Water confidence: face wet, bobs, breath control
- Supported and unsupported floats (front + back)
- Streamlined glides, kicks and basic propulsion
- All four strokes: front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke, butterfly
- Water safety: entries, exits, survival floating, rescue introduction (Bronze+)
Lesson formats for kids
Pick by personality and group size, not just price. Nervous starters benefit from private 1-to-1 for the first 6–10 lessons before moving to small group. Confident kids who like company often progress fastest in a 4–6 swimmer group split. Our cost guide models a real 12-week term across formats.
- Private 1-to-1: full coach focus, fastest progression. From $60/lesson.
- Semi-private (2–3): same-level peers, lower per-head rate. From $50 per head.
- Small group (4–6): friends or neighbours grouped by level. From $40 per head.
MOE Primary 3/4 SwimSafer, and what we cover on top
Most government and government-aided primary schools embed SwimSafer Stages 1–3 in Primary 3/4 PE through partnered ActiveSG complexes: 8–10 lessons per cohort, delivered by SwimSafer-Instructor-certified coaches. Our breakdown of the MOE module covers what the school programme reaches and where parents typically supplement.
Where lessons happen
At your condo pool (islandwide, with MCST approval, which we handle for you) or at an ActiveSG public complex. Popular kids-friendly complexes include Heartbeat @ Bedok, Sengkang, Yio Chu Kang, and the reopened Teck Ghee complex (sheltered teaching pool, Jan 2026). For condo lessons, plan a 2–4 week lead time for MCST approval.
Who you'll coach with
Every Swim Select coach is NROC-registered with current Standard First Aid + CPR/AED, SLSS Bronze Medallion or higher, and (for SwimSafer assessment) the SwimSafer Instructor certification. Female and male coaches at the same per-lesson rate, with no surcharge. See our coach verification checklist for what to ask before any booking.
